When the Rahbeks lived here, this room was used as a guestroom for visitors who could not reach home before Vesterport, the West Gate, closed for the night. Here we can today see a collection of exhibits associated with the author Johannes Ewald. Ewald died before the culmination of the Bakkehus period, but Rahbek was so enthusiastic about Ewald’s works that he printed them in his periodicals.
There are several portraits of Ewald here, for instance the busts made by the English sculptor C.F. Stanley and the Danish sculptor H. Beeken. Stanley’s bust is realistic, Beeken’s idealised. Also on show is Ewald’s portable writing case with a secret compartment in the base, in which, far later, was found a collection of letters, which have now been published.
